 Into The Heritage

Covering a total area of 99,975 hectares, the world heritage site of Wuyi Mountain is located northwest of Fujian province, China, with its geographic coordinates being 27°32′36″~27°55′15″ (N) and 117°24′12″~118°02′50″ (E). According to the different features of resources in the scenic area, it is divided into four protected areas: Wuyishan National Nature Reserve in the west, Nine-bend River Ecological Protection Area in the centre, Wuyishan National and Cultural Landscapes in the east, and the Han-dynasty Remains of Kingdom of Minyue. The core area measures 63,575 hectares, the secondary core area, 36,400 hectares, and the buffer zone, 27,888 hectares.

The western part of Wuyi Mountain is the key area to conduct global biodiversity protection. It houses the largest, best-preserved and most typical central subtropical original forest eco-system so far existing on the same latitude in the world. The eastern part features an ideal harmony of hills and water, culture and nature, and is famous for its picturesque views of river, peaks, valleys and gorges, time-honored history and numerous heritage sites. The middle part, as the link between the eastern and western parts, is a major area to maintain a good ecological environment.

For its rich natural and cultural resources of outstanding universal value mentioned above, the Chinese Government nominated the Wuyi Mountain for a world natural and cultural heritage status. In December 1999, Wuyi Mountain was inscribed on the World Heritage List, symbolizing that it has become the common treasure of humanity.
